1. What part of the body is known as the “ detoxification center” for the breakdown of alcohol? The liver chemically breaks down most of the alcohol into acetic acid. Also the kidney eliminates 5 percent of alcohol in the urine and the lung exhale 5 percent of alcohol.
2. What is the rate of detoxification in the body - how many ounces per hour ?
A average person can eliminate 0.5 oz (15ml) of alcohol per hour.
3. At what volumes are wine, beer, and hard liquor considered to be equal?
The volume 12-ounce, 10 proof beer is equal to a five-ounce glass of 24 proof wine, which is equal to a 1 1/2 ounce shot (jigger) of 80 proof hard liquor
4. List five harmful long - term health effects of alcohol abuse.
a. Immune system suppression: pneumonia
b. Gastrointestinal problems: diarrhea and hemorrhoids.
c. Increases female hormone: estrogen and lowers male hormone testosterone.
d. Mental and neurological disorders
e. Hypoglycemia ( blood sugar low)
5. List three short - term effects of alcohol abuse.

6. List five items that influence a person’s blood alcohol level.
a. number of drinks influence the blood alcohol level.
b. speed of drinking causes a higher level of alcohol in the body.
c. gender: alcohol typically last longer in a woman’s body.
d. Weight is important, because a person who weighs more will have a lower alcohol level.
e. Finally, food will slow the alcohol absorption.
7. What is the legal limit in the state of NJ for BAC while driving?
There is no legal limit of BAC because even when your BAC is below 0.08 your senses and physically and emotionally are unstable. Therefore, you can still be guilty of drunk driving.
8. What are the legal consequences of underage drinking?
The penalties for the first offense are a fine of up to $500, 8 - 12 hours of community service, 30 - day suspension of license, and mandatory alcohol awareness course.
9. In terms of alcohol and drug use, what is a craving?
A craving a powerful desire for a substance that cannot be ignored. Cravings are a symptom of the abnormal brain adaptations of addiction.
10. In terms of alcohol and drug use, define tolerance.
Tolerance is a state of adaptation in which exposure to a drug induces changes that result in a diminution of one or more of the drug’s effects over time.
11. In terms of alcohol and drug use, what is physical dependence?
Physical dependence is a state of adaptation that is manifested by a drug class specific withdrawal syndrome that can be produced by abrupt cessation, rapid dose reduction, decreasing blood level of the drug, and/or administration of an antagonist.
12. In terms of alcohol and drug use, what is loss of control?
Loss of control is when someone has a lack of understanding; unconscious
13. What are the signs that someone is “drunk”?
First of all, movements are unsteady, smell of breathe, and can not talk or think correctly.
14. What is the difference between someone who has “passed out” and someone who has “blacked out”?
Passing out is a chemically - induced coma. The person becomes unconscious for a period of time and eventually wakes up. While blacking out is alcohol - induced amnesia and the person is unable to remember what happened when he/she was awake and functioning.
15. In terms of alcohol, what does FAS stand for? What is FAS?
FAS is Fetal alcohol syndrome: a congenital medical condition in which body deformation occurs or facial development or mental ability is impaired because the mother drinks alcohol during pregnancy.
16. List three ways that a pregnant woman’s smoking may affect the baby.
a. First of all the woman will have vaginal bleeding.
b. There could be a placenta abruption
c. Also, the baby could suffer through an ectopic pregnancy
17. List five harmful long - term health effects of second - hand smoke.
a. Can cause children to develop asthma.
b. Increase to develop lung cancer.
c. Increase to develop heart disease.
d. Also nasal sinus cancer or a stroke.
e. Finally second hand smoking can cause breathing problems like pneumonia or increased coughing.
18. List three signs of tobacco use.
a. a sore that does not heal
b. A lump or white patch
c. Difficulty in chewing
19. List five harmful long - term health effects of marijuana use.
a. Marijuana affects the brain.
b. Also, marijuana is a very addictive substance.
c. You can suffer from mental disorders.
d. Effects the lungs and cause cancer.
e. Marijuana can affect daily life and also socially.
20. List three signs of marijuana.
a. First, dilated pupils.
b. Secondly, a bad smell.
c. Thirdly, sleepy and lack of motivation.
Define the following terms:
1. Abstinence: act or practice of refraining from indulging
2. Addiction: being abnormally tolerant to and dependent on something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming
3. Binge Drinking: heavy consumption of alcohol over a short period of time (just as binge eating means a specific period of uncontrolled overeating).
4. Chemical Dependency: lost the power of choice over using mood-altering chemicals
5. Date Rape: When forced sex occurs between two people who already know each other
6. Depressants: drugs that inhibit the function of the central nervous system.
7. Habituation: decrease in response to a stimulus after repeated presentations
8. Illicit: forbidden by law, rules, or custom.
9. Narcotics: variety of substances that dulled the senses and relieved pain
10. Stimulants: class of drugs that elevate mood, increase feelings of well-being, and increase energy and alertness.
